As a new Mum I was keen to provide my baby with the healthiest most natural start in life but found that often this idealist ‘green’ approach was hard to maintain as our lives are much busier than that of our grandmothers who never had to take baby out in the car etc   so when a friend lent me the ‘snug wrap’ to try I was sceptical that I could keep it up as I had failed with the pins and diaper pants before.  However after two days I was on line and purchased my first set.

The system is as easy to use as disposable diaper and I found I didn’t have to change any more than I did before, I have subsequently had three more children and apart from a couple of new wraps for my forth have used the same ones.

The things I like so much are:

From next week consumers will be able to use their wallet power to reduce landfill waste by buying reusable cotton diaper packs from major supermarket chains Foodtown, Woolworths and Countdown throughout New Zealand.

This is in response to a groundswell of consumer demand as parents recognize that modern cloth diapers are a mainstream, cost-effective choice which are easier and more convenient than ever to use, as well as having other benefits.

All over the world parents recognise that cloth diapers offer economic and environmental advantages over disposable diapers, which have come to symbolise landfill waste. But until now parents needed to buy cloth diapers from specialist baby care and eco-friendly stores.

Around 10 million disposable diapers are used in New Zealand every week. In households with a baby disposable diapers make up to 50 percent of the household’s total waste – and disposable diapers take up to 500 years to break down. Parents typically change a baby’s diaper at least 4,000 times by the child’s second birthday, which means about a ton of disposable diapers in landfills for every child. Real Nappies or Pocket diapers?  Pocket diapers means they have a pocket that you stuff with the absorbent part, there are also All in one systems (AIO) these mean the absorbent part is built in to the diaper.  Every time your baby wets the diaper this means you have to wash the whole diaper.  With Real Nappies you simply change the inner and keep the same diaper cover on (unless on the odd occasion it gets soiled or wet),  Real Nappies covers usually need changing every 3rd change.  Less washing, less expense!

Cloth diapers – swooshing them around the toilet, boiling the diapers, soaking for days…..  ARRRRGGGHHHH!

Not with Real Nappies!  We have developed our own solution down here in our little green New Zealand that eliminates the problem of needing to soak and totally abolishes the need to hot wash.  Our solution is included in our Birth to Potty Pack and is called ‘Real Nappies Nappy Fresh’.  It’s a biodegradable eco-friendly sanitizer that is totally perfume-free, enzyme free and hypoallergenic.  So great for littlies with sensitive skins too! 

All you do is add a dessertspoon of Nappy Fresh to your existing detergent in the washing machine and your diapers will come out clean, fresh, white and sanitized.  Not even any need to hot wash your diapers or pre-soak them.

What is Dry-Pailing?

Here’s what you do:  Dry-pail was my fave solution, simply flush the solids away with our liners.  Rinse your diapers through and pop in a container (a bucket is fine), don’t put any water in the bucket (hence why called ‘dry-pail’).  There will not be any smells as there are no chemicals reacting with the urine.  Then when it’s wash day, simply transfer the contents of the bucket into the machine, add your detergent and 1 dessertspoon of Nappy Fresh and away you go!  Diaper wraps can just be washed with your own clothes.

Top Tip – If staining persists, you can also soak your diapers with Nappy Fresh if required.
