It was great to see a CNET’s, Natali Morris, try only cloth diapers for a month and love them! Yay!

This was someone who has a busy schedule and is certainly not a mom that is tied to the washing machine washing diapers. She’s a perfect candidate for disposable diapers, but she gave cloth a go and was pleasantly surprised at just how easy she found them.

What were her findings?

Link through here and watch Natali’s experiences with cloth diapers.

http://www.cbsnews.com/video/watch/?id=7131550n

So which diapers are Real Nappies?

Real Nappies cloth diapers are a wrap and prefold system similar to the first diaper shown on CNET. They have a 100% cotton diaper, which is separate to the cover. This makes life SOOOOO much easier, as come diaper change time you simply take out the wet diaper and pop in a dry one.

You keep the same diaper cover on bubs until it gets wet or smelly!

This means less washing, less drying and less cost!

Help I’m so confused!

Natali mentioned that the cloth diaper choices available to new parents are so overwhelming, that many parents just don’t even go there. I understand that and can totally relate to it! I know pretty much every cloth diaper out there and when I go online I still get totally confused, Arrrggghhh!

Our solution?

Well this is where the Real Nappies Birth to Potty Pack really comes into it’s own, no more confusing questions like:

What do I need? How many cloth diapers shall I buy? Which is the best system for me?

Our Birth to Potty Pack is your one-stop solution in a box – everything you will ever need to diaper your baby from Birth up until Potty Trained, all in one box!

How do you know it’s the best system for you?

Put simply, because you, the customer tell us we are the best! You love our customer service, the quality of our products, the price, the simplicity and that Real Nappies actually work!

PLUS, We are a New Zealand company and are:

The hospital’s choice of diaper to use in Maternity,

Used in Daycare Centres

By the way did I also mention we are the ONLY cloth diaper company that gives a 2-child guarantee on our diapers?? We must truly trust in the quality of our products to do that!

I’m very pleased my wife and I started Real Nappies – it was a struggle at first, like I’m sure most businesses find and there was the odd time when we wondered if we’d done the right thing. Seven years later we know we did and now sometimes I get so passionate about this diaper business I sometimes think I’m on a mission.

From time to time I get a bit carried away with myself and start thinking what a huge difference that could be made if everyone on the planet started using cloth instead of disposables. A family using disposables would have to put out an extra couple of sacks of garbage out each week full of diapers, more if they had 2 children. Multiply this by the amount of households in the U.S. or even the world and you have a staggering amount of waste that’s increasing in size all the time going to landfill that will sit there for hundreds of years!

So how do we get everyone on the planet using cloth diapers? This is the mission, we have chosen to accept it! Is it daa daa da da, daa daa da da MISSION IMPOSSIBLE?

Well to do this we would have to go up against the enormous multinational companies who manufacture disposables and also at the same time convince all the people of this world to use cloth. Perhaps this is mission impossible but we are trying, and I don’t think it does any harm to think BIG!

So yes, I guess we are on a mission – but one we have to be patient with.

Real Nappies Birth to Potty Pack are fast becoming one of our best selling items and no wonder! This pack contains all the diapers you will ever need for your little one at a ridiculously low price. PLUS with the 2 child guarantee what more could you want? Now come on we all have better things to do with our hard earned dollar then throwing your money away with disposable diapers. Come on, give it a go, you’ve got nothing to loose and everything to gain. Our thousands of happy customers can’t all be wrong…

One of our happy customers wrote a great review on Amazon, so good we thought you may like to read some of it, so we’ve put it into a list of reasons to use Real Nappies, for the full review check it out at Amazon!

1. Other uses for Real Nappies:

‘I ordered the birth to potty pack because this system had the best reviews. I went to pack away the newborn diapers, when I realized I can use the smaller diapers as a “catch pad”/bib for breastfeeding. I’m currently on the Infant size and I’m using the Crawlers and Toddler sizes as tummy-time drool mats, drool mats for naptime, lap pads, and as changing pad liners. The use as changing pad liner was an epiphany after reading so many bad reviews for changing pad systems that required special liners that ultimately end up rolling and bunching in the wash. I received some name-brand washable lap pads as a gift, and they were really small and only lasted two washes before falling apart because they’re just two pieces of felt glued together; what a waste! These Real Nappies have turned into so much more than just diapers, and this set really is everything you need to diaper your baby!’

2. Easy to clean:

‘I use Charlie’s Soap and Haven’t had any staining or odor issues yet.’

3. Know when your baby needs changing:

‘When you feel the diaper, there’s never any question if it’s wet, versus with disposables we’re always poking the diaper over and over again to figure out if that’s the reason baby’s crying.’

4. Nappy Rash? What’s that!

‘When my baby was sick and having diarrhea, we went 48 hours in disposables, and in that short amount of time he got diaper rash. When we switched back to the nappies, the rash went away. We’ve never had to use diaper cream (why add more chemicals to your baby’s life?).’

5. Excellent Quality.

‘These cloth diapers have far better workmanship than other prefolds out there. The sewing is tidier and doesn’t unravel. For the diaper covers, I love that the fabric is soft and there’s no exposed PUL (other companies have an exposed polyurethane liner, almost like pizza parlor tablecloth, and it tends to get sweatier).’

and another reviewer:
‘I have had the whole gamut of issues with previous diapers that I have tried, and these are far superior in function, at a fraction of the cost. Add to that a two child use guarantee out of your diapers and you really can’t go wrong.’

6. Slim Fit diapers.

‘I wanted a few extra inserts so I bought some prefolds and covers from other companies for comparison. I found that the Real Nappies are a little narrower in the crotch so baby’s legs can be closer together (how is baby supposed to crawl with a huge diaper in the way?) so I joke that they are European cut.’

7. Quicker Potty Training

‘People have told me the cloth diapers will make potty training easier because baby will know when the diaper is wet, versus with super absorbent diapers, babies tend to sit around in them for longer periods of time.’

8. Who needs Gussets?

‘I was initially concerned at the lack of leg gussets, but have been pleased and relieved to find that they function perfectly without them. I think perhaps with some of the thinner inserts out there, the leg gussets become more necessary. But, as these are meant to fit firmly against baby, that doesn’t pose a problem with these and I have not had leaking issues’

9. Save money too!

‘I never planned to “go green” but after trying these diapers, I can see how easy it is to make my household healthier by reducing the amount of chemicals and trying to choose greener products. While the initial investment is upfront, in the long run, I will spend less on diapering my baby.’

And the conclusion: ‘I love these diapers.’

Well what more can we say, other than there are many many other reasons to use Real Nappies but this is from just one of our happy purchasers!

There’s many more reviews on Amazon and on the Real Nappies USA site, so check us out and don’t forget to give us a thumbs up if you like what you read!

I actively sell Real Nappies, sometimes I am in supermarkets and sometimes at expos. Some people come up to me and say they would never use anything else – they know the benefits of using cloth over disposables, but some people say things like “Oh no I wouldn’t be bothered with all the hassle,” or “I don’t want to have to wash pooey diapers.”

A mother and daughter passed by in a supermarket recently and the mother took one look at our diapers, saw the price and said to her pregnant daughter “Don’t look, just keep walking.” I asked why she had said this and she said “Look at the price of those compared to disposables.” I of course explained the fact that this would be a one time purchase compared to repeatedly buying disposables, but sadly my attempt at an explanation fell on deaf ears.

So some people already assume that for one reason or another cloth diapers are more hassle than disposables. Let me address each reason why people might think they are and explain why I think they aren’t and you can decide for yourself.

The main reason is washing, yes you do have to wash cloth diapers, that’s how you use them again. At Real Nappies we design our best selling pack – The Birth to Potty Pack so that you only have to was your diapers once every third day – we give you enough diapers to last that long. It only takes a few minutes to put on a wash, so not too much hassle!

Perhaps people don’t like the thought of handling a soiled diaper, well if you use one of our diaper liners the solids can be flushed straight down the toilet, so you handle the edges of the liner, not the poo!

Some people, like the lady I mentioned earlier might even think cloth diapers are more expensive than disposables, perhaps initially they are but they need to do the sums!

Well, hopefully I’ve put to rest the main couple of reasons why people wouldn’t use cloth diapers, now if I may, let me explain a few more benefits of cloth diapering.

When you change your child’s diaper the solids need to go somewhere. Why not flush them down the toilet to get rid of them? A dirty disposable would be put in your dustbin. Now I know from experience (before I became educated) that after a few days of putting dirty diapers in your trash the smell is absolutely nauseating, not to mention what’s it’s like after a whole week.

As we all know the cost savings are huge – you will literally save thousands of dollars if you use cloth compared to disposables, and with the Real Nappies 2 Child Guarantee you won’t have to buy any nappies at all your second time round so the savings are even greater then.

The health reasons – there are no gels or chemicals in our diapers so there is no chance of burns, far far less chance of diaper rash and no heat build up as all the materials we use are breathable.

Of course the impact on the environment is much less – nothing goes to landfill, so we’re not waiting 500 years for cloth diapers to decompose.

Well back to the original question – Are Cloth Diapers Any More Hassle Than Disposables? If you call spending an extra few minutes every few days more hassle then I guess the answer to that question is yes. But just look at the positives. In my mind that extra few minutes is well worth it!

It was of great interest to me to read the recently printed article in the Wall Street Journal:
‘ Procter & Gamble Co. is scrambling to put out an Internet wildfire over the safety of its new Pampers diapers, a crucial brand that accounts for about 11% of the company’s revenue. Some mothers who blame the reengineered diapers for causing rashes, even “chemical burns,” have started a Facebook page to detail their claims and press P&G to reverse course. The claims quickly gained traction, leading this month to a lawsuit and inquiries by product-safety regulators in the U.S. and Canada.*’

Why risk it?

Of course P&G are strongly defending themselves and their products, but groundswell points to a potential problem. So why even entertain the notion and take the risk?

Our friends at ‘Dirty Diaper Laundry’ also quoted:

‘On the Facebook group, consisting of 728 members, she discovered many, many moms complaining of the same burn like rash. All of the rashes began after using the new Cruisers with Dry Max.

I think Pampers users would be pleasantly surprised at how absorbent, easy and comfortable cloth diapers are.’

Convenience = Chemicals?

Chemicals are introduced to everything nowadays to preserve the shelf life of products or to increase the convenience, yet what is the long term effect of this so called ‘convenience’, there must be consequences. How long till we know the extent of these consequences and of being dubbed a throwaway generation?
Irrespective of what you as a parent believe, and I certainly am no expert on the subject, but as a parent myself commonsense suggests that there is a problem from exposing baby’s delicate, sensitive skin to chemicals unnecessarily.

The Natural Solution

So why not avoid the chemical burn question entirely by using cotton cloth diapers with no chemicals. That’s why we make Real Nappies cloth diapers which have no chemicals and are sooo easy to use! Real Nappies cloth diapers use 100% natural, breathable, soft cotton next to your babies’ skin. That means no risk of chemical burns with Real Nappies cloth diapers. They are simple and easy to use, save you $$$ and are better for the environment too! Not only that but with our 2 child guarantee you can ensure you keep your next little one chemical free too!
It’s not rocket science, it just makes sense, naturally.

New Zealand parents will be amongst the first in the world to have mainstream supermarket access to modern reusable cloth diapers, thanks to New Zealand company Real Nappies and major national supermarket operator Progressive Enterprises.

Parents can save cash and carbon at the supermarket checkout

New Zealand parents will be amongst the first in the world to have mainstream supermarket access to modern reusable cloth diapers, thanks to New Zealand company Real Nappies and major national supermarket operator Progressive Enterprises.

From next week consumers will be able to use their wallet power to reduce landfill waste by buying reusable cotton diaper packs from major supermarket chains Foodtown, Woolworths and Countdown throughout New Zealand.

This is in response to a groundswell of consumer demand as parents recognize that modern cloth diapers are a mainstream, cost-effective choice which are easier and more convenient than ever to use, as well as having other benefits.

All over the world parents recognise that cloth diapers offer economic and environmental advantages over disposable diapers, which have come to symbolise landfill waste. But until now parents needed to buy cloth diapers from specialist baby care and eco-friendly stores.

Around 10 million disposable diapers are used in New Zealand every week. In households with a baby disposable diapers make up to 50 percent of the household’s total waste – and disposable diapers take up to 500 years to break down. Parents typically change a baby’s diaper at least 4,000 times by the child’s second birthday, which means about a ton of disposable diapers in landfills for every child. And disposable diapers cost around $3,000 more than reusable cloth diapers per child. (Source: Zero Waste New Zealand Trust.)

Gone are the days where using cloth diapers meant laborious washing, complicated folds and pins. Real Nappies new generation cloth diapers have velcro-like fasteners, prefolded cotton diapers and flushable biodegradable diaper liners that make them very easy to use. These innovations are all based on feedback from parents.

“Customers say that we’ve understood what matters to parents,” says Liz Mole, Managing Director, Real Nappies.

“It’s significant and commendable that New Zealand parents can now buy cloth diapers as part of the weekly shop,” says Kath Dewar, sustainability marketing expert, KD Consulting. “The easier manufacturers and retailers of sustainable products make it for consumers to buy their products, the more likely they are to succeed. Reusable products, like these cloth diaper packs, need to become as mainstream and available as disposable products are today. In time, throw-away products will become as socially unacceptable as littering.”

“Now that cloth diapers will be available at supermarkets it’s really simple for parents to purchase exactly what they need, with the Real Nappies Cloth Diaper Essentials Pack and the Real Nappies Cloth Diaper Birth To Potty Pack,” says Liz. “Each Cloth Diaper Essentials Pack contains all the diaper covers and cloth diapers you need at each age, and the Birth To Potty Pack contains over 100 items, all you need for cloth diapering your child from newborn baby to potty-trained toddler.”

“We’d like to think we are a natural choice when supermarkets are looking for a cloth diaper brand,” says Liz. “We’re the leading supplier of cloth diapers, our cloth diapers come in convenient kits and are endorsed by hospitals, and our company offers strong internet and telephone support to customers.”

“Parents often want to make the move to cloth diapers but aren’t sure how, or if it will mean inconvenience or mess,” say Liz. “But it’s not the case, there are considerable advantages for your baby and your lifestyle as well as the planet.”

Real Nappies cloth diapers are considerably cheaper than disposable diapers. The cloth diaper itself is made of 100 percent natural cotton, so is better for a baby’s skin, and many customers have told the company that rashes and irritations reduce when they switch to Real Nappies cloth diapers. The cloth diapers come in a variety of sizes to grow with a baby. Real Nappies guarantees that its cloth diapers and diaper covers will last at least two children.

According to the Zero Waste New Zealand Trust, it takes as much energy to produce one disposable diaper as it does to wash a reusable cloth diaper 200 times – and producing a disposable diaper uses eight times more non-renewable materials. If washed in full loads, line-dried and used for a second child, cloth diapers produce 40 percent less carbon dioxide than disposables. Consumer Magazine also confirms that reusable diapers cost less than disposable diapers (Consumer Magazine, August 2009).

Real Nappies cloth diaper products have been available in babycare and eco-friendly stores across New Zealand for some time, as well as on-line, and they are used by Waitakere Hospital’s Maternity Services. All babies born at Waitakere hospital go home wearing a reusable cloth diaper from Real Nappies, with two extra cloth diapers in a take home pack. Real Nappies cloth diapers are also available on-line in the United States at www.realnappiesusa.com.

Liz says that Real Nappies is delighted that Progressive has taken this step to help encourage less consumption and reduce waste. “We’d like to raise a toast to them,” she says. “Bottoms up!”

ENDS

About Real Nappies

Real Nappies was born in 2001 from a vision of a reusable cloth diaper system that would become the preferred alternative, as easy and convenient as any other choice. The company estimates that it has already saved about 8 million disposable diapers from landfill, as well as saving parents a small fortune. Real Nappies cloth diaper products are widely available online at www.realnappiesusa.com.

We’ve put together 12 of the many reasons to choose Real Nappies cloth diapers versus other available cloth diaper systems:

Real Nappies is the most comprehensive pack available, it is a serious Birth to Potty Pack! When checking out competitors make sure to look at actual pack contents, our pack gives enough for 24 newborn changes for example so it means 1 machine wash every 2-3 days per child.

2. Real Nappies or Pocket diapers? Pocket diapers means they have a pocket that you stuff with the absorbent part, there are also All in one systems (AIO) these mean the absorbent part is built in to the diaper. Every time your baby wets the diaper this means you have to wash the whole diaper. With Real Nappies you simply change the inner and keep the same diaper cover on (unless on the odd occasion it gets soiled or wet), Real Nappies covers usually need changing every 3rd change. Less washing, less expense!

3. Real Nappies per diaper change are heaps cheaper than other systems!

4. Real Nappies is a 2 part system (separate cover to inner cloth diaper) and is very quick and easy to dry. The inner cloth diaper opens out for easy and quick washing and drying. The diaper cover dries pretty much instantly, the inner diaper about equivalent to a small hand towel to dry. All in ones / pockets can take up to 3 days to dry per diaper, who’s got time for that with 2 kids in cloth!

5. Real Nappies cloth diaper is 100% natural, breathable cotton – most other systems use synthetic fabrics next to baby’s skin.

6. Real Nappies offer a unique guarantee – we guarantee our products will last for a minimum of 2 kids. Therefore if a cover / cloth diaper breaks, velcro fails etc we replace the product with brand new product (terms and conditions apply, does not cover normal wear and tear). No other company offers this unique guarantee simply because their product will not last as long!

7. With Real Nappies you can machine dry the cloth diapers and the covers if you wish to. Some other diapers you can only line dry.

8. Real Nappies are used in New Zealand Hospitals and DayCare Centres and are NZ’s #1 reusable cloth diaper. All other brands competed for these tenders (including well known other pockets and AIO’s) and because our system is so simple, economical and versatile we were chosen and won the tender. Subsequently Real Nappies Cloth Diapers are used successfully in Day Care Centres and Hospitals in New Zealand.

9. Real Nappies cloth diapers can be folded to accomodate different wetters: boys, girls and newborn (liquid poo fold!) Therefore the diaper can be made thicker and more absorbent where ever your baby needs it most. With other systems that use pads this is not always possible.

10. Real Nappies uses a prefold cloth diaper system, any expert will tell you that prefold systems are the system of choice for newborn babies – other systems are too bulky or do not provide enough containment. Real Nappies have 4 sizes which accomodate all different weights and sizes of babies.

11. Real Nappies use velcro closures which are quick and easy to use – especially on a wriggly baby, no fiddly snap closures. Plus velcro is more adjustable than snaps, and Real Nappies guarantee the velcro!

12. Real Nappies use a flushable diaper liner - no need to scrap poo from your diapers, simply pop the biodegradable liner in the toilet with the solids, no smelly trash cans. BEWARE! Not all systems use a flushable liner. We include 800 liners in our Birth to Potty Pack!

We hope this helps answer your questions – if you need any more help our customer careline and website are second to none.

Find out 5 great reasons to use Cloth Diapers.

Disposable Nappies are the first choice of many parents, so why turn to those awful leaky, plastic pants and pins? Well times have changed and cloth diapers are becoming a real alternative, read on to find out our top 5 reasons to choose cloth diapers instead of disposables.

Reason #1: Easy to Use.

Modern cloth nappies are so easy to use, with no complicated folds and definitely no pins. They fasten with Velcro-type closures in exactly the same way as a disposable nappy, plus they come with a flushable nappy liner that can be flushed away in the toilet with the solids. No more smelly trash bins and no more rubbish to pay for!

Reason #2: Comfortable.

Real Nappies look like disposables, but are 100% natural, breathable cotton, soft and gentle against babies’ skin. Would you rather wear paper undies or cotton? Plus being cotton the air can circulate freely around baby’s skin allowing it to breathe. Your little one will spend 24/7 in a nappy for the next 2 ½ -3 years so a chemical-free nappy that allows baby’s skin to breathe is a great option.

TOP TIP: The best thing for baby is NO nappy time! Try and let your baby have time to kick around with no nappy on at all.

Reason #3: Save money.

Did you know that you will change your baby’s nappy over 6,000 times in their lifetime, multiply this by the cost per disposable nappy (aprox from $0.39 each) + nappy sacks + wipes and you will quickly see that compared to spending $699 (based on Real Nappies Birth to Potty Pack) + $300 (washing) savings equate to $$$’s!

TOP TIP: Some companies (yes including us, Real Nappies) guarantee their products to last so you can use them on future children and save even more money!

Reason #4: Better for the Environment.

Did you know that EVERY disposable nappy ever thrown away still exists in landfill?? In actual fact there is no such thing as a ‘disposable nappy’. Your little gorgeous bundle of joy will create up to one tonne of nappy waste and where will all this end up? Our landfill sites.

Be you a ‘greenie mum‘ or not that’s pretty shocking and the reality is that every time you use a single cloth nappy, you are doing your bit to reduce the mountain of waste, making a better world for your baby to grow up in.

TOP TIP: You don’t have to use cotton nappies all the time. If it suits you better, try using them at home and use disposables when you are out. Once you are confident you will use them all the time – at home or out and about!

Reason #5: Great for Potty Training

Parents tell us that their babies are potty trained earlier and more easily when they use cotton nappies, as they understand and know when they feel wet. Think about it, when we were little and were put in cloth nappies, ask our parents at what age we were potty trained, I can assure you it was a lot earlier than the average nowadays!

TOP TIP: Try reusable Potty Training Pants when you get to this stage, they are great and mean little one can pull them up and down themselves and you don’t get wet clothes with any little accidents!

Hopefully you are convinced by these top 5 reasons cloth diapers are great and worth considering.

Failing all the above and you just don’t know where to start, there are lots more great tips on-line at a certain excellent site…. LOL!
