Of course with Real Nappies prefold diapers being 100% cotton they are soooo easy to maintain and wash.  Our covers are also really easily to look after.   You can hot wash both cotton diapers and covers, no worries about special washing!  There are some ingredients however we suggest you never use on your cloth diapers or covers.

Ingredients to Avoid in your Washing Detergent

• Whiteners and Brightners (tiny particles that remain on your clothes making them seem brighter after washing.  These are not necessary and may cause
• Whitening enzymes (help dissolve stains but can cause skin reactions on sensitive babies)
• skin irritation)

• Fragrances and Dyes (Unnecessary chemicals for babies’ laundry)

• Bleach (harsh chemical against babies’ delicate skin)

• Fabric softener (leaves a residue on your diapers and will cause them to be less absorbent

Cheaper Detergent can be better for your Real Nappies Cloth diapers!

Cheaper detergents are less likely to contain any of the above additives that are best avoided.  Therefore you may be able to get away with a cheaper detergent to use on your cotton cloth diapers – saving even more money through using Real Nappies!!

TopTip: Remember to always use less detergent when washing cloth diapers – usually about 1/4 of manufacturers recommended amount, that way you will not build up a detergent residue on your covers which can lead to stinky, inaffective covers.

It’s the same story in Australia as it was in the US – everyone was so surprised we guarantee our diapers for 2 kids. 

Melbourne is a great city and I’m so lucky I get to travel around so much spreading the word of the cloth diaper. 

Having said that there are lots of cloth diaper firms now, they seem to be popping up everywhere, far more than when we first started around 8 years ago.  So I guess I’m not the only one spreading the word on cloth diapers which is great news!

• If you are ready to wash straight away simply wash at cold or warm temperature using your ordinary detergent and an optional spoonful of Nappy Fresh to whiten and sanitize your Booster Pads

We’d already made our minds up that we wanted to use cotton, as this is the friendliest fabric next to your baby’s skin.  So now we only had to decide on what we would use to hold this cotton nappy in place.

We found the material that we wanted to use for the cover – PUL which is waterproof and breathable but we were unsure of how to fasten this cover together.

The pins seemed too risky, didn’t want to puncture any precious skin!  The poppers were too fiddley – when a wriggling baby is in front of you, you just need something that sticks quickly.

We came to the conclusion Velcro worked the best – it was easy to stick and unstuck, but stayed stuck when needed.  This is one of the reasons we chose Real Nappies.  So now we had the best material next to our baby’s skin and a very convenient cover to hold that diaper in place.

This was someone who has a busy schedule and is certainly not a mom that is tied to the washing machine washing diapers.  She’s a perfect candidate for disposable diapers, but she gave cloth a go and was pleasantly surprised at just how easy she found them.

As a new Mum I was keen to provide my baby with the healthiest most natural start in life but found that often this idealist ‘green’ approach was hard to maintain as our lives are much busier than that of our grandmothers who never had to take baby out in the car etc   so when a friend lent me the ‘snug wrap’ to try I was sceptical that I could keep it up as I had failed with the pins and diaper pants before.  However after two days I was on line and purchased my first set.

The system is as easy to use as disposable diaper and I found I didn’t have to change any more than I did before, I have subsequently had three more children and apart from a couple of new wraps for my forth have used the same ones.

The things I like so much are:

1)     Not having to buy disposable diapers! (apart from the odd pair if we go away as it’s a bit of a pain to take cloth diapers away)

2)     Far more natural to surround babies sensitive skin with cotton than plastic which contains phthalates

3)     Better for the very generation that we are nurturing, they will not thank us when they have to deal with the contamination of our ground and water when they are in their 20’s because we were too lazy to wash a few diapers

4)     Don’t have to feel bad if you change them and they do another poo straight away!  How many times do you throw a barely used diaper in the trash?

6)     No tricky folding, pins, washing instructions, soaking……………………………you just put them in a bucket and do a load of whites every couple of days.  They dry so fast that you can almost use the wraps straight out of the machine.
