Why we started Real Nappies
“You are so lucky nowadays you don’t have to use those awful cloth diapers, pins and plastic overpants!” That was the comment of my mom when I told her I was pregnant. Then 7 years later here we are with the largest Cloth Diaper Company in New Zealand. So why did we make this decision, and not only make the decision to use cloth but to start up a company and become so passionate about it that here we are today launching into the USA.
Well actually I blame my husband….
…yes my husband was the one who once read a little article about the chemical content in disposables and simply dropped into conversation one day that he would not be using disposables on our baby. Well news to me I thought! OK, I said thinking back to the warnings of plastic pants from my mum! Newborns are hard enough without worrying about leaky diapers!
The Facts
It was at this time when I started looking into the matter a little more that I too became interested in cloth. Sure, there’s a lot of exaggerated stuff out there but there’s also a lot of truth, the basics you can’t argue with:
1) Disposables get thrown away, and yes they end up at landfill
2) Disposables cost a fortune, no one can deny that, even with all the deals and bulk buying, they still cost heaps for those cute cartoon pictures on the front!
3) Disposables are full of chemicals, has your diaper ever got so wet at night time that when you change your baby those little crystals are on their skin. Well surely that can’t be good??
Diaper Nerd!
So I became a diaper nerd, I bought every different type of diaper on the market, some were good, some were bad, some expensive and some even more expensive! Either way, the confusion surrounding all the varieties of cloth diapers was huge. Plus being such a niche market they were really inaccessible to moms and dads.
